Horror icon Bruce Campbell, known for his role as Ash Williams in The Evil Dead franchise, has revealed a recent cancer diagnosis. The 67-year-old actor shared the news on social media, explaining that while the condition is “treatable,” it is not “curable.”

Campbell’s announcement, made on Monday, March 2nd, clarified the reason for upcoming cancellations of public appearances. “Professionally, a few things will have to change – appearances and cons and work in general need to take [a] backseat to treatment,” he wrote. He expressed “big regrets” for having to pull out of several summer conventions, noting that “treatment needs and professional obligations don’t always go hand-in-hand.”

While the specifics of his diagnosis were not disclosed, Campbell expressed optimism, hoping to be well enough by summer to tour his new comedy film, Ernie & Emma, which he wrote, directed, and stars in, this autumn.

Campbell concluded his post by stating, “I’m not trying [to] enlist sympathy – or advice – I just want to get ahead of this information in case false information gets out (which it will).” He reassured fans, adding, “Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while. As always, you’re the greatest fans in the world and I hope to see you soon!”

The post garnered thousands of well wishes from fans.

Campbell’s career is synonymous with the Evil Dead series, having originated the role of Ash Williams in Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult classic and reprising it in Evil Dead II (1987), Army of Darkness (1992), and the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead (2015-2018). He also lent his voice to 2023’s Evil Dead Rise. His involvement with the franchise continues as an executive producer for the forthcoming sequel, Evil Dead Burn, set for release this July.

Beyond the cabin in the woods, Campbell has also appeared in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films, Coen Brothers’ productions like Fargo and The Hudsucker Proxy, and made a cameo in Raimi’s latest blockbuster, Send Help.
