Jim Carrey’s “New Look” Ignites Online Frenzy: Was it Really Him?

Paris, France – The internet was abuzz this past weekend following Canadian actor Jim Carrey’s appearance at the César Awards in Paris, where he was honored with an Honorary César Award. Photos and videos of Carrey, sporting a noticeably fuller and smoother face, quickly went viral, prompting a flurry of speculation and even unfounded accusations that it wasn’t the beloved actor at all, but rather a lookalike.

Carrey’s representative, Marleah Leslie, quickly put the rumors to rest, confirming to CNN, “Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award.”

The “fuss” stems from the actor’s relatively reclusive nature in recent years. Carrey had previously hinted at retirement in 2022 before making a public return in 2025 for the UK premiere of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik.

Adding fuel to the online fire, drag artist Alexis Stone, renowned for his celebrity transformations, posted a series of images on social media implying he had impersonated Carrey at the event. Stone’s post, captioned “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris,” included pictures of Carrey at the awards alongside a mask, fake teeth, and a wig resembling Carrey’s dark hair.

The speculation, while ultimately debunked, is perhaps understandable given Carrey’s history of comedic versatility and his famously “rubbery” expressions, which propelled him to fame on “In Living Color” and in films like “The Mask.” Furthermore, Carrey has previously made headlines for unconventional public appearances, including a “whacky” New York Fashion Week interview where he made statements like “There is no me. There is just things happening,” later explaining it as an “existential experiment.”

Beyond the “lookalike” theories, Carrey’s changed appearance also sparked discussions about potential cosmetic procedures. While his representative did not comment on this, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reported in January 2025 that male cosmetic procedures are on the rise, with men comprising approximately 7% of all cosmetic surgery patients in 2024.

Another element that fueled the conspiracy theories was Carrey’s acceptance speech, which he delivered in French, not his native language. However, Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the César Awards, clarified to Variety that Carrey “worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words.”

Caulier further confirmed Carrey’s genuine presence, stating, “He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him.

His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”

In essence, it appears the internet got a bit carried away. Carrey’s appearance, while different, was indeed the real deal, and his dedication to delivering a speech in French only further underscores his appreciation for the prestigious honor.
