‘Gun battle while school was letting out’ involved man on felony pretrial release, officials say

A gunfight between two men outside a Chicago public high school during afternoon dismissal in January involved an 18-year-old who was on felony pretrial, officials said during a detention hearing for the accused man.

No injuries were reported during the January 22 incident, which forced administrators to put Austin College and Career Academy High School on an hour-long lockdown, prosecutors said.

Nehemiyah Santiago, 18, is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm toward a school and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. The second gunman is not identified in court filings and it is unclear if he has been charged…
