Owner of plantation home ‘tied to great injustice’ plans to rebuild after fire

A home built with labor of enslaved people in 1859 will be rebuilt as an “exact” replica following its loss to an electrical fire in 2025, according to a story by Plaquemine Post South. Nottoway Plantation in White Castle, La., burned on May 15, 2025. The property and its contents, which included numerous antiques, were lost.

At the time it burned, Nottoway was the largest surviving antebellum home in the nation with 53,000 square feet of floor space. It was being used as a resort. The outbuildings on the property survived.
