New requirements for Ohio SNAP benefits: Who it effects

CLEVELAND (WJW) — Staff members were busy filling food boxes Tuesday at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank in Cleveland, where leaders say the need remains high — and is growing.

The increased demand comes as new work requirements for Ohio’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are now in effect.

The updated rules require many recipients to work at least 20 hours per week, volunteer, or enroll in a job training program to maintain their benefits.

“Initially, it was around 27,000 individuals who were thought to be impacted. Now we’re looking at 5,400 individuals that could possibly be impacted,” said Jessica Semachko, director of advocacy and public education at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank…
