First day of Waste Management services after divisive change to Portage trash system

PORTAGE, Mich. β€” A divisive change to the city’s trash system will begin on Monday.

The City of Portage voted unanimously in July to approve a five-year, roughly $29 million contract with Waste Management, making it the city’s sole provider for trash and recycling beginning on Monday.

In doing so, the city moved to offering one trash hauler rather than each resident choosing which trash service they want to use.

In response, Best Way Disposal, a smaller Kalamazoo-based trash service that has served Portage residents for 34 years, launched a ballot initiative called “Take Back the Trash” to challenge the decision…
