Advocates seek clarity ahead of custody hearing for deported Rutherford County mother

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Advocates gathered Tuesday, March 3, outside Rutherford County Juvenile Court ahead of a custody hearing involving Esther Lopez Sanchez and her one-year-old daughter, raising questions about the timeline of her criminal case and subsequent immigration detention.

According to court records, Lopez Sanchez was arrested on Aug. 15, 2024, alongside her partner, Roberto Nunez-Gomez, on drug- and firearm-related charges in Rutherford County. Records indicate that Lopez Sanchez’s charges were dismissed.

Following the dismissal of Lopez Sanchez’s criminal charges, advocates want to know what factors, if any, prevented reunification with her daughter before she was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)…
