BALTIMORE, MD—A Baltimore counselor’s decision to spend just one extra dollar on his lottery ticket has paid off in a major way. The Maryland Lottery announced this week that the city resident claimed a $50,000 prize, thanks to the Powerball Double Play option.
The winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, initially thought his luck had run out. After checking his tickets following the main Powerball drawing on Feb. 25, he realized none of his numbers matched. However, because he had added the $1 Double Play feature, his ticket was automatically entered into a second drawing held 30 minutes later.
A Second Chance at Success
The second drawing proved to be the charm. The counselor matched four out of the five white balls plus the red Powerball. While he was thrilled with the five-figure win, he was just one number away from a life-altering payday.
