Storm Track 3 Forecast: Overnight strong storms, threat returns by end of week

Low overcast keeps temps for most across Kansas cool today, although a warm front is lurking just to our south. This boundary will play into our chance for storms after midnight.

A Marginal Risk stretches from Oklahoma across parts of Kansas into Missouri for larger hail tonight.

Storms initiate after midnight in north central Oklahoma and build northeast into Kansas closer to Medicine Lodge.

Storms will then form into a complex of heavy rain and thunder, tracking through our Southcentral and Southeast Kansas counties into early Wednesday morning. Hail to the size of ping pong balls is a possibility.

Temperatures tomorrow morning will be in the 40s to the southeast and much colder near freezing to the northwest.

Clouds will try to erode from west to east after the passage of the stormy complex on Wednesday. As a result, there will be another great divide in temps. Under the clouds, highs favor the 50s. In the sunshine to the west, we surge back to the 60s.

More fog is possible Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Some of which could be quite thick, reducing visibility for travelers.

Thursday and Friday are days to be weather aware. Temperatures will warm as a strong system enters the region.

Areas to the southwest will face a few stronger storms late Thursday for damaging winds and large hail. This area as I mentioned yesterday is now included in the Storm Prediction Center’s outlook for severe weather.

Storms will increase in coverage, tracking to the east and filling in over central Kansas Thursday night. Some of these storms could also be strong enough to become severe.

Then on Friday, the axis for severe weather shifts east of I-135. Closer to the Missouri state line, towns have been upgraded to an Enhanced Risk for severe weather with numerous severe storms pegged for parts of the Flint Hills and points east. All forms of severe weather are possible, including a few tornadoes.

The cold front sweeps through, dropping temps back on Saturday with a recovery to a much warmer Sunday. There is a chance for more unsettled weather next Tuesday through Wednesday and should be monitored for another round of severe storms.
