JUAREZ, Mexico (Border Report) – Lacking a sea or beaches, Juarez merchants are preparing to offer U.S. residents on spring break what they do have: culture, medical tourism and a safe party atmosphere.
The merchants and city government are preparing a series of Saturday events in mid- to late March to bring more U.S. visitors to the city. They include a “Juarez en La Juarez” outdoor food and musical event along one of the city’s best-known avenues and one within walking distance of a U.S. port of entry.

“We met with the businesses. We had success last year with the spring break event and the next one will be this month,” said Tania Maldonado, Juarez’s economic development director. “People are familiar by now with these events on Avenida Juarez. They know these are family friendly with no (security) issues.”
Avenida Juarez or Juarez Avenue is the street immediately south of the Paso del Norte international bridge. City officials have closed it five times previously on a Saturday to host street-style festivals with musical bands and outdoor stands…
