United Airlines Cracks Down on In-Flight Audio Annoyances with New Headphone Policy

United Airlines has officially updated its passenger policy to address a long-standing complaint among travelers: the disruptive practice of playing audio or video content without headphones. The airline confirmed to Fox News Digital that its contract of carriage was revised on February 27, now explicitly requiring passengers to use headphones when listening to content onboard.

The airline stated, “We’ve always encouraged customers to use headphones when listening to audio content, and our Wi-Fi rules already remind customers to use headphones.” They further explained, “With the expansion of Starlink, it seemed like a good time to make that even clearer by adding it to the contract of carriage.”

This significant change falls under the airline’s “refusal of transport” section, which outlines the conditions under which United can deny boarding or remove a passenger. Under the revised language, passengers who fail to use headphones while playing audio or video could face removal from the aircraft. Additionally, the policy stipulates that travelers causing “loss, damage or expense of any kind” may be held responsible for reimbursing the airline.

Florida-based etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore applauded United’s new policy, stating, “It’s about time.” Speaking to Fox 32 Chicago, Whitmore emphasized the importance of “packing our manners whenever we go on an airplane, whenever we travel.” She highlighted that “the violators of this, ironically, are parents – parents who don’t put earbuds in their children’s ears or headsets” on them.

The update has ignited considerable discussion online. One Reddit user commented, “I fly a lot on United and have never experienced this, but I would lose my mind if someone started playing it out loud.”

Another user countered, “I’d say it happens on about one-third of my trips.” Many noted that while airlines typically have the authority to address disruptive behavior, incorporating headphone use into the contract of carriage provides flight crews with a clearer mandate for enforcement.

Some even suggested extending the rule to airline lounges.

For passengers caught without their own headphones, United’s in-flight entertainment information indicates that complimentary basic wired pairs are available upon request.

United Airlines is the first major U.S. airline to formally integrate headphone use into its legally binding passenger agreement, although other carriers also promote similar in-flight etiquette. Whitmore reiterated, “This has always been a big issue.

It started with cellphones many, many years ago.” She anticipates that flight attendants will issue a warning before taking more drastic measures, adding that anyone who defies the policy could “be booted out by the FAA immediately.”
