On Tuesday, Jaydah Westmoreland, who was arrested and charged with the 2023 shooting death of her mother, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. She was sentenced to 16 to 22 years in prison. Westmoreland will receive credit for 931 days already served.
The defense and court records described Westmoreland, who was 19-years-old at the time of the shooting, as having been diagnosed with schizophrenia, prompting an order from Judge Allen Baddour that the defendant receive mental health treatment during her time in custody.
