Today, gunfire turned a key route into north Sacramento into an active crime scene, shutting down Highway 160 and tangling the morning commute. Officers blocked off the roadway as they pieced together a trail of incidents stretching from the riverfront into the Dos Rios neighborhood. At least one person was taken to a hospital, and officials kept details tight while investigators worked both the freeway and nearby surface streets.

Video from ABC10 showed Caltrans traffic cameras freezing vehicles in place on Highway 160 near Richards Boulevard while officers processed evidence. Traffic was funneled off the freeway and onto nearby streets as the closure dragged into the commute hours.

Police Flood Streets Near Smythe Academy

Local coverage shows officers responding just after 5:30 AM to the intersection of Dos Rios and Vine streets, where a gray sedan with shattered windows sat parked outside Smythe Academy of Arts and Sciences. At least one person who had been inside the sedan was taken to a hospital, according to KCRA. Investigators located shell casings on Highway 160 near Northgate and said they were working multiple scenes as they followed reports of related shootings. Officers were also seen detaining a man near River City Way and Millcreek, canvassing a nearby apartment complex, and towing vehicles that matched investigators’ descriptions.

CHP Probes Freeway Scene, Looks for Suspect Pickup

A FOX40 crew at the scene described police inspecting a car with broken glass and clothing nearby, and the station reported that the California Highway Patrol was handling the freeway portion of the investigation via a FOX40 item reposted on Yahoo. Early reports indicated investigators were searching for a gray or white pickup truck that may be linked to multiple shootings in the area.
