DEC cautious of ‘extremely ambitious’ Brunswick project

BRUNSWICK — The state Department of Environmental Conservation is wary of an area developer’s ambitions to excavate truckloads of sediment in a certain time frame without needing a mining permit.

In a letter from Feb. 17, DEC Regional Director Sean Mahar expressed apprehension toward Paramount Building Group of New York’s pending plans to truck out materials excavated from a hillside along Creek Road over the course of two years. The excavation would prepare the property for later development into 18 subdivided home lots.

The DEC letter, obtained through an open records request, was sent to Brunswick Town Supervisor Phil Herrington and other town officials nearly a month after the Colton Ridge project received a negative environmental review declaration from the Planning Board and more than a week after it faced criticism at a public hearing based, in part, on concerns about mining at the site…
