Younger veterans face different struggles, crave a new kind of help

Jen Bailey didn’t know what to do next when she returned to her hometown of Stoughton after serving in the U.S. Army for 11 years.

While in the military, a soldier’s mission is clear. It’s less so when returning home. Bailey said she was depressed for months after she was honorably discharged with a hip injury at 29 and focused all of her energy on her son, who was 7 at the time.

But now that her son is grown and in the Army himself, the 43-year-old Bailey has been forced to focus on herself, a daunting and isolating task in a world that didn’t see veterans like her coming…
