Developer provides update on Central Warehouse demolition

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — In August 2025, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the beginning of the demolition process on Albany’s Central Warehouse. But how much progress has been made on the notorious Capital Region eyesore?

NEWS10 spoke with Kevin O’Connor, CEO of the Advance Albany County Alliance, the development corporation that owns the Central Warehouse property. He told us that work is well underway at the South Pearl Street site.

According to O’Connor, the Central Warehouse project includes two phases: asbestos remediation and the final demolition. Right now, crews are in the middle of asbestos removal, though progress is reportedly moving slower than expected due to weather delays.

“Asbestos remediation involves using water vapor, but due to the low temperatures this winter, the water vapor has been freezing,” O’Connor said.

In an effort to work around the cold, crews have used portable heaters to heat the building and keep the water vapor from freezing. Work has still, however, undergone pauses due to this season’s long stints of below-freezing temperatures…
