Franklinville student honored to sing the national anthem at sporting event in Albany

Selena Hernandez, a 10th grader from Ten Broeck Academy in Franklinville, was selected to sing the national anthem at the NYSPHSAA Intersectional wrestling championships this past weekend in Albany.

Hernandez currently has been singing the Star Spangled Banner at the sporting events being held at her school. Ryan Jordan, assistant chair for Section VI wrestling, heard Hernandez sing and after consulting with others, invited her to sing at the state qualifiers in Fredonia in February. After that performance, other coaches kept asking about her and they all conversed with others from the state tournament and decided they would be honored to have Hernandez sing at the finals.

Hernandez said she was “excited and nervous” to perform in front of thousands of people in a giant arena. During the first performance, she was shaking, but the second one, she was much calmer…
