Jackson councilman wants to appeal water rate increase

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Jackson City councilman wants the city to appeal a federal judge’s decision to raise water rates in the capital city.

Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, said he’s asking other councilmembers to allow the city’s legal department to fight U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate’s order. Wingate granted JXN Water’s request for a 12% rate increase.

“While the Court grants this 12% increase as a survival measure, it does so with the strict expectation that JXN Water must aggressively pursue needed structural reforms to prevent further financial strain on the rate-paying public,” Wingate said in the ruling.

Following the court’s decision, JXN Water officials said they would implement an update of 11.7% increase for all customers. They said the average single family monthly bill will increase by less than $10 per month, to $88 per month for combined water and sewer service…
