Man gets prison for robbing Lubbock gas station with machete

LUBBOCK, Texas — After taking an open plea, Matthew Martinez, 32, was sentenced by a judge on Tuesday to 50 years in prison for robbing a Lubbock gas station with a machete in 2024.

EverythingLubbock.com previously reported on October 19, 2024, Martinez walked into a gas station in the 2500 block of South Loop 289 and pointed the machete at two employees. Court records said Martinez demanded they open the cash register and then took the money.

Officers found Martinez in the 7400 block of Waco Avenue. He was found with a machete, pocketknife and case. While Martinez was handcuffed in the back of the patrol vehicle, he damaged the rear passenger side window, causing officers to call the paddy wagon to transport him.
