‘He made no effort’: Salem man sentenced after then-girlfriend was ejected from vehicle

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Salem man who left his now-deceased girlfriend outside after she was ejected from his vehicle will spend nearly a decade behind bars.

Marion County Circuit Court Judge Sean Armstrong sentenced Atilano Davalos to 110 months — or more than nine years — in prison on Tuesday, the District Attorney’s Office announced. He pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter of his “on-again, off-again” partner Carla Vasquez earlier this month.

The Marion County DA’s Office reported a Salem resident discovered Vasquez deceased in the 1000 block of Rural Avenue Southwest on Thursday, May 23, 2024. Authorities said she rode in the passenger seat of Davalos’ car earlier that morning after they had both gone out to a bar.

A video found on the 40-year-old man’s phone later revealed he told her to get back into the car while she was intoxicated and hanging out of a window, according to officials. The DA’s Office said Davalos eventually drove “off a busy road and into a residential area,” slightly accelerating his car before abruptly pressing the brake and causing Vasquez to be ejected into the street…
