Sarasota County Commission rejects code amendment allowing high-density hotels on Siesta Key

SARASOTA COUNTY (WFLA) — Sarasota County commissioners unanimously rejected a proposed change to development rules on Siesta Key this week.

It is a decision residents said protects the barrier island from high-density hotel development, which they’ve fought against for the last several years.

The proposed amendment to the Unified Development Code would have allowed for more hotel rooms per acre in an area near the south bridge on Siesta Key. The proposed change was submitted by a developer who has plan to build a 120-room hotel on roughly one acre along Old Stickney Point Road.

Currently, hotels on Siesta Key are limited to 26 units per acre…
