Several events celebrating Black History Month were scheduled for the last day of February. Among them, a gathering at Fort Defiance at 1 p.m. for an informative/entertaining program hosted by the Mount Olive Cemetery Historical Preservation Society, (MOCHPS).
Just a few miles away, beginning at 4 p.m. approximately 100 people filled the gymnasium of the Kleeman Recreation Center to celebrate “100 Years of Black History 1926–2026 – A Century of Black History Commemorations: Marking 100 Years of Observances.”
The program at Fort Defiance, called simply, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” featured musical performances by Dr. Yvonne Kendall, and Lazariah Northington, as well as a slide show led by speakers who recognized important members of the African-American community, and highlighted their many contributions to American culture…
