Construction begins on massive solar plant in North Lakeland

Construction has officially begun on a new solar farm that could increase Lakeland’s access to renewable energy by five-fold.

Lakeland officials joined with Williams Corp. and Lakeland Electric to hold a ceremonial groundbreaking on a 74.8-megawatt solar plant near Florida Polytechnic University on March 5.

“Lakeland continues to grow. Responsible investment in critical infrastructure ensures we are prepared for that growth,” Commissioner Stephanie Madden said. “This partnership marks the dawn of a bright new era for our city. The sun that has warmed this land will soon power homes and businesses. As each panel captures sunbeams and transforms them into electricity, those beams of light become a harvest of renewable bounty.”…
