Bill pushing for universal Pre-K funding fails in Tennessee Senate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A bill aiming to give every 4-year-old in the state of Tennessee access to high-quality, public preschool failed to garner approval from a key committee on Tuesday.

SB 2512/HB 2008, which are the latest versions of the “Tennessee Universal Pre-K Funding Act,” would establish a special account in the state treasury – the Universal Pre-K Fund – which would be “used exclusively to fund, establish, and maintain a universal pre-kindergarten program in each public charter elementary school in Tennessee,” beginning in 2027.

The account would be funded through a 9.5% tax on digital advertising services by businesses or people with “an assessable base of $50,000,000 or more.”…
