Palm Beach County Clerk alerts public of spike in traffic ticket payment scams

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla (CBS12) — Palm Beach County Clerk Mike Caruso is warning residents about a new wave of texting scams in which fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officers and pressure people into paying legitimate traffic fines through Zelle.

The Clerk’s Call Center has received nearly 30 scam related reports since Monday, prompting the office to issue a countywide alert.

According to the Clerk’s office, at least two people were contacted by scammers using the phone number 561-412-4186. The victims were told to send money via Zelle to [email protected] to resolve their traffic cases. The callers falsely claimed to represent either the Jupiter Police Department or the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office…
