UW–Madison police say license plate reader cameras helping investigations on campus

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Police at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Police Department say a new system of license plate reader cameras is helping investigators identify vehicles connected to crimes on and around campus faster.

The cameras, made by Flock Safety, capture still images of vehicles and license plates passing through certain areas, allowing investigators to search for vehicles connected to specific incidents.

“It’s taking a photograph of a vehicle on a public roadway, just a snapshot in time, and it’s recording what I’ve been describing as a fingerprint of a vehicle,” UW–Madison Police Chief Brent Plisch said. “It’s recording the color, the make, the body type of the vehicle, and then the license plate.”…
