The St. Paul Pioneer Press printed a more detailed account about Leon Peltier’s shooting on the same day that the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune printed its story.
The investigation continued and the following day the newspaper gave an update:

According to the following article, it appears that a new clue surfaced.
An editorial written by George Thompson, owner of The Dispatch Printing Company, was the last reference to the shooting that appeared in the newspaper. I chose to not add it to this post because it gave no further insight regarding the incident and the remarks Thompson made were derogatory.
We’ll never know exactly what happened, but if I were to conjecture I would say that Leon’s brother Albert was probably correct, “the injury is the result of an accident.” If Leon did shoot himself, I imagine he would have been embarrassed and a story telling otherwise was the best way for him to save face…
