Throwback Thursday: Remembering The Niner, and going it alone…

It’s been another in a series of super-quiet weeks music-wise. Glancing at my site, I notice I haven’t been to a rock show since… Dec. 1 — that’s some sort of record, but not surprising considering the lack of indie shows booked here over the past three months.

For Throwback Thursday, below is a column published in The Reader/Omaha Weekly 20 years ago this month that briefly talks about The 49’r and why I attended so few shows there. Youngsters may be asking, “What is this 49’r that you speak of?” Well, it was a bar located on the north side of 49th and Dodge that closed way back in 2010 and was torn down to make way for an unnecessary CVS pharmacy.

The 49’r was a dive bar with a slogan that went something like “Smack in the middle of everything with no parking.” It was a college hangout that became a second home to a handful of local drunks. The bar also hosted live music, mostly on weekends, despite not having a formal stage. Bands set up on the floor on the south side of the room near a front door rarely used as an entrance on show nights since most came in through the back…
