Crews: Fiery diesel fuel tank crash shuts down I-40E in WNC

CANTON, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) reported that a portion of I-40E is closed following a crash on the interstate.

Officials reported the crash near mile marker 28.5 near Clyde in Haywood County. The highway is closed two miles after exit 27, and there is no estimated time for its opening.

The chief of the North Canton Fire Department said that crews were called to the scene after an 18-wheeler hit a road barrier. The impact ripped open the truck’s diesel fuel tank, causing a fire. The fire was put out, and no one was injured.

The chief reported that the crash caused large damage to the highway infrastructure and that crews are still on the scene working to remove the truck from the roadway. As a result, traffic will be routed through the town of Clyde until drivers can safely rejoin I-40E…
