Tampa Bay rivers no longer source for drinking water due to severe drought

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — Due to persistent severe drought conditions, Tampa Bay Water announced that water from rivers is no longer viable as a source for the drinking water supply in the surrounding area.

Tampa Bay Water will announce the current state of the drinking water supply on Friday at 1:30 p.m., to help residents gain a better understanding of the significance of this supply shortage and how the community can work together at this critical time.

According to the Tampa Bay Water website, surface water from the Alafia River, Hillsborough River and the Tampa Bypass Canal are typically skimmed for use as a source of drinking water. This water is first treated at the Tampa Bay Regional Surface Water Treatment Plant and then stored in the 15.5-billion gallon C.W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir for the dry season…
