Fayetteville steadily improves its transit with a ways to go | Opinion

The city is in line to receive five new buses, and that is just a small part of a major expansion sought by Fayetteville leaders that would see the Fayetteville Area System of Transit, aka FAST, become a regional system with a new operations facility in the western part of the city.

Transit Director Tyffany Neal presented to the City Council a feasibility study March 2 that looks at increasing routes to west Cumberland County and would expand service to Hope Mills to the south and Spring Lake to the north.

“We have been trying to transition our system from a transit system of need to a transit system of choice,” said Neal, who addressed the council at its Monday work session. “We have a high percentage of our ridership that needs transit, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We are thankful to be in a community that embraces transit.”…
