Thousands of acres on the chopping block as Lancaster farmers fight to keep out developers

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — Farmers across Lancaster County believe its agricultural roots are in jeopardy as local governments are pushing to make thousands of acres of farmland available for commercial development for the first time in decades.

It’s an issue that’s been packing municipality meetings for months, as supervisors take a look at their areas’ growth boundaries.

Growth boundaries were first created 30 years ago by the Lancaster County Planning Commission as a way for municipalities to balance the preservation of farmland and the need for residential and industrial development, or “growth.”…
