MDOT spring weight restrictions set to begin

LANSING, Mich. (WJRT) – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is continuing its annual adjustments to spring weight restriction areas to protect the roads.

Starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, March 9, weight restrictions will be lifted on all state trunkline highways from the southern Michigan border extending northward to include the following route:

  • M-43 in the city of South Haven
  • East on M-43 to US-131 in Kalamazoo County
  • South on US-131 to I-94 in Kalamazoo County
  • East on I-94 to US-23 in Washtenaw County
  • North on US-23 to I-96 in Livingston County
  • West on I-96 to M-59 in Livingston County
  • Finally, east on M-59, ending at the I-94 interchange in Macomb County.

Weight restrictions will remain in place and enforced on all state trunkline highways north of this route, which includes the entire Upper Peninsula and Mackinac Island. State routes typically carry M, I, or US designations.

In the restricted areas, the following will apply:

  • All-Season Routes (marked in green and gold on the MDOT Truck Operators Map):
  • No reduction in legal axle weights will take place.
  • Extended Permits:
  • Valid for oversize loads in weight-restricted areas on designated routes.
  • Single-trip permits will not be issued for overweight loads or loads exceeding 14 feet in width, 11 axles, and 150 feet in length.
  • Seasonal Routes (marked in solid or dashed red on the MDOT Truck Operators Map):
  • A posted weight reduction of 25% for rigid (concrete) pavements and 35% for flexible (asphalt) pavements.
  • A maximum speed limit of 35 mph for certain vehicles.
