JCPS exceptional education staff could lose two weeks of contracted days to save money

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — If your JCPS student needs extra help, there could be fewer days for them to receive it. It comes as the reins in its budget deficit by keeping costs for exceptional education even.

The proposed cuts, which could be voted on next Tuesday, would reduce contracted days for some exceptional childhood education staff by about two weeks. One educator says the reduction would effectively require unpaid work.

“We’re educators, and we care about these kids beyond our regular school day and our regular hours,” said Jenny Graff, who coordinates special education needs for students at Camp Taylor Elementary School. “With our physical therapist, our occupational therapist, our teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing, the visually impaired, the school psychologist.
