STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An electrical fire at the Richmond County Courthouse in St. George prompted a large emergency response Thursday night.
The blaze was reported just before 9 p.m. in the basement of the courthouse at 18 Richmond Terrace between Schuyler Street and Borough Place, according to the FDNY. The building houses the borough’s Surrogate’s Court, which handles cases involving adoptions, guardianships, trusts and wills.
An FDNY spokesperson said the fire was caused by a sparking transformer in the building’s basement.
