Arkansas State Police traffic stop leads to cocaine seizure, federal charges, prison for Dominican man

HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. – Officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office said a man from the Dominican Republic, but living in the U.S., was sentenced to federal prison on Thursday.

Officials said 60-year-old Lazala-Soto of Bani, Dominican Republic, was sentenced to a 70-month prison sentence followed by 5 years of supervised release after pleading guilty to a single charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine after his 2024 arrest.

U.S. Attorney’s officials said Bani had been living in New York, New York, despite being a citizen of the Dominican Republic.

His sentence came because of an Aug. 29, 2024, traffic stop by Arkansas State Police, which led to them finding “seven kilo-like bundles” of cocaine in the trunk of the car Lazala-Soto was driving.
