Assault case dismissed after suspect sentenced to 86 years for triple homicide

An assault case against Earl Bennett was dismissed shortly after he was sentenced to 86 years in prison for a triple homicide, according to court filings.

Separate from the triple homicide, Bennett was also charged in Ramsey County court in connection with an officer-involved shooting in St. Paul. He was accused of pointing a firearm at police before officers shot him, and was charged with one count of second-degree assault and one count of illegal firearm possession.

Bennett’s attorney filed for the charges to be dismissed due to the 86-year sentence for the triple homicide. The motion was granted at a hearing on Thursday…
