Troy landlord reacts to passage of Good Cause Eviction

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Troy City Council unanimously voted to adopt the Good Cause Eviction law on Thursday night. The law is designed to protect tenants from eviction for unjust cause.

Organizers and tenants came to the meeting with stories and data of how laws like this have worked in other municipalities and states. Organizers said reviewing the law has went on long enough and it’s time to move forward.

“Good cause eviction legislation has no impact on the construction of new housing, has no impact on housing supply, and generally has a positive effect on the eviction rates of tenants,” said an organizer during public comment.

Local landlord and business owner Jamie Magur owns 30 units of apartments across downtown Troy and said that this law won’t provide the protections that tenants are hoping for. He said the problem lies with absentee landlords who don’t live in Troy…
