Portsmouth marching band leaders raise safety concerns as students walk home after dark

Parents and community leaders in Portsmouth say a student safety gap is emerging after dark for members of a long-running youth marching band.

The New Generation Marching Band, a community-based program that has served young musicians in the city for decades, rehearses twice a week on Elm Avenue. But when practice ends around 8 p.m., some students are left walking home through dimly lit areas.
