Suffolk Navy vet with PTSD answers door, faces police rifles in case of mistaken ID

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The pounding on the apartment door of a Navy veteran kept getting louder, but it wasn’t someone’s fist that was knocking. It was the end of a rifle in the hands of a police officer.

Police were serving a drug warrant Feb. 12 at the home of Shanta, and we are using only her first name. The warrant didn’t have her name, but it did have her address.

Shanta’s personal plate was already full with tragedies from the past. She had witnessed a friend’s suicide, and she had lost a shipmate at sea. She’s rated 100% disabled with PTSD, depression and anxiety.

She answered the door.

“I opened the door and I saw all these guns in my face,” she said. “I can’t even describe it — I just froze, having people in my face and being screamed at.”…
