Ohio crash survivor among first women in US to use new advanced prosthetic hand

TOLEDO, Ohio — A northwest Ohio woman who lost her arm in a crash caused by a suspect fleeing police is now among the first people in the United States to use a new type of prosthetic hand designed to restore everyday movement.

Lacey Fredrick, a 36-year-old Ohio warehouse worker, recently became one of the first women in the country to be fitted with the Metacarpal GEM prosthetic hand, a newly released prosthetic designed to mimic more natural hand movements.

Fredrick lost her arm in 2023 after she was seriously injured in a crash involving a suspect fleeing police in Toledo. At the time, she spoke with WTOL 11 about the life-altering impact of the crash and the long road to recovery.
