This New Orleans Restaurant Known As The ‘Birthplace Of Brunch’ Turns 170

A New Orleans culinary institution known as the “birthplace of brunch,” and for cocktails like the Grasshopper and Whiskey Punch is celebrating 170 years of operation this year.

Located in the heart of the French Quarter, Tujague’s is one of the longest-running restaurants in the United States. It was founded in 1856 by French butcher Guillaume Tujague who immigrated to the United States with his wife Marie Abadie. The couple opened the restaurant adjacent to the city’s public market and would welcome local workers for a midday “butcher’s breakfast” – a tradition now called “brunch.”

The restaurant has been owned by a handful of different families who navigated world wars, prohibition, and global pandemics, moving locations just twice but always staying on Decatur Street.

“Reaching 170 years is an incredible achievement and a true testament to the loyalty of our guests and the dedication of our team,” the restaurant’s current owner Mark Latter said…
