No tornado, but strong storm leaves downed trees and damage in Johnson County

A severe storm late Friday night that prompted a tornado warning sent Johnson Countians scrambling to their basements and kept firefighters busy with at least two homes hit by trees and numerous issues with power lines.

The National Weather Service initially issued a tornado watch for the entirety of the Kansas City metropolitan area at about 8:15 p.m. Friday. It was scheduled to remain in place until 4 a.m. Saturday.

As the leading edge of the storm entered western Johnson County, a severe thunderstorm warning was then issued at 10:44 p.m., including the possibility of 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts and penny-sized hail.

Tornado warning issued at 11:35 p.m. Friday

Radar indicated rotation of the storm that triggered a tornado warning to be issued in northern Johnson County at 11:35 p.m., prompting tornado sirens to go off and automatic messages to be sent to the phones of those who have signed up for NotifyJoCo emergency alerts…
