City of Springfield proposes sewer rate increases to align with the cost of service, maintain federal compliance

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Springfield Environmental Services will bring forward a set of proposed sewer rate increases for fiscal year 2027 at the Monday, March 9 City Council meeting.

The increases are structured to keep up with the cost of providing efficient wastewater management in Springfield and meet the requirements of the federal Clean Water Act. The proposal was previously discussed at a Nov. 18, 2025 City Council Lunch Workshop. Following the November discussion, Environmental Services conducted public outreach to ensure residents, businesses, and wholesale partners understand the proposed adjustments and reasons behind them. If approved, increases will take effect on July 1.

The City of Springfield operates its wastewater system under a court-approved consent judgment with the State of Missouri that requires significant investments to reduce sanitary sewer overflows and maintain treatment plant performance.
