‘If it saves just one life’: Parents of pedestrian killed near Mead High School grateful for proposed changes

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — Two months after a 20-year-old pedestrian was killed in a crosswalk near Mead High School, Spokane County leaders say safety improvements are on the way. The victim’s parents say they’re hopeful the changes mean their child’s death won’t be in vain.

Pictures, flowers and balloons can be seen at the intersection of West Hastings Road and West Bellwood Drive, all to memorialize 20-year-old Eva Allen, who was hit by a Mead school bus while walking in a crosswalk in January.

“Felt like your heart got ripped out of your chest,” said Thomas Allen, Eva’s father. “It was a hard pill to swallow…we could not believe that it had happened.”…
