Protesters call for Charleston to phase out horse-drawn carriage rides downtown

CHARLESTON , S.C. (WCIV) — Activists gathered Saturday outside the Charleston City Market to protest the horse-drawn carriage rides that are a familiar sight downtown, calling for the industry to be phased out in favor of alternatives.

“Tradition doesn’t make it right,” said Shari Crestman with Advocates for Carriage Horses.

Crestman said she wants Charleston to move away from using horses for tourist carriage rides and instead adopt other options. “I would love to see them phase out using horses and use e-carriages or some other mode of transportation for their tourists,” she said…
