Nearly 30-acre complex expected to bring 500 jobs and $170M annual economic impact to site of former Eastland Mall

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) — The final piece of land that once held Eastland Mall broke ground Friday, marking the start of construction on Eastland Sports Campus.

The mall closed in 2010. Since then, community members, business leaders, and elected officials have debated the future of the property. Friday’s ceremony drew a crowd that chanted “today we did it” as dirt turned on the site.

What the campus will include

The project will span nearly 30 acres and include six full-size athletic fields, a 100,000-square-foot indoor facility, and outdoor space for cultural events. Organized sports will be offered, and the campus will also allow children to use the space at no charge.

Carlenia Ivory Cantey is credited as the vision behind the project. She said the campus will serve a broader purpose beyond athletics…
