Lawmakers advance bills to set up child care cost-sharing pilot

Three-year-old Kenzleigh Gresham joined her mom, Alexis, at the General Assembly building this week for a press conference about various child care legislation state legislators are considering.

One proposal would prevent Virginians from suddenly losing full access to subsidized care slots as a result of a pay increase, as happened to Alexis recently.

Another would set up a pilot program incentivizing companies to cover a portion of the cost of care for their employees’ children. Business groups are touting the pilot as a potential solution to workers leaving jobs, turning down promotions or forgoing raises because child care is too expensive…
