Surviving the Rails: A 53-Hour Amtrak Adventure on the California Zephyr

CHICAGO TO EMERYVILLE, CA – For those who dream of epic journeys across the American landscape, the Amtrak California Zephyr offers an experience unlike any other. Stretching from the Windy City to the shores of California, this overnight train boasts the title of the nation’s longest rail journey. One intrepid traveler recently embarked on this 53-hour odyssey, transforming a potentially daunting trip into a surprisingly enjoyable adventure.

Having previously logged 75 hours on various sleeper trains, the traveler, Joey Hadden, was no stranger to life on the rails. Yet, two consecutive nights on a train presented a new challenge. Drawing on past experiences, Hadden developed a comprehensive “survival guide” to not just endure, but thrive during the lengthy journey.

The Right Room Makes All the Difference

When facing a multi-day train ride, comfort is paramount. Hadden chose to splurge on a private bedroom for the 53-hour trip, a decision that proved invaluable.

For approximately $2,200, the 50-square-foot space provided a foldout sofa, an upper bunk, a seat, a pullout table, a full private bathroom, and a closet. This personal sanctuary significantly enhanced the relaxation factor compared to the more communal coach seating.

For those on a tighter budget, a roomette offers a smaller private cabin without a bathroom at a lower price point.

Pre-Trip Prep for Peak Performance

Even with a 2 p.m. departure from Chicago, Hadden opted for an early start on departure day, setting an alarm for 6 a.m. The strategy?

To be sufficiently tired by day’s end to ensure a restful first night on the train. This plan paid off, with the traveler consistently achieving seven to eight hours of sleep each night.

Before boarding, several hours were spent walking around Chicago. This intentional exertion served a dual purpose: tiring out the legs and soaking in as much fresh air as possible before being confined to the train for an extended period. By the time of boarding, the opportunity to sit was a welcome relief.

Smart Packing for Sustenance and Stimulation

While Amtrak sleeper accommodations include complimentary meals in the dining car, and a café car offers snacks for purchase, Hadden wisely packed a personal stash of treats. This included a variety of options like chips, granola bars, trail mix, stroopwafels, chocolate, and gummies, saving money and satisfying every craving throughout the journey.

Boredom can be a formidable foe on long journeys. To combat this, Hadden brought a diverse array of activities and intentionally scheduled time for each.

A book, a journal, a Nintendo Switch, two cameras, and a work laptop provided ample entertainment. The goal was to make the days feel structured and fulfilling, preventing the feeling of endless repetition.

(A musical instrument was also packed, but this was deemed a misstep for future trips.)

Comfort extends to footwear. Slippers for lounging in the private room and Crocs for easy movement around the train and for use in the shower proved to be invaluable additions, allowing bulkier boots to remain stowed.

Maximizing Space and Staying Connected (Offline)

In the compact bedroom, utilizing the top bunk even during the day created an additional “loft” space, making the room feel larger and offering another area for reading or playing video games.

A key consideration for the California Zephyr, unlike many other Amtrak routes, is the absence of onboard WiFi. For those who enjoy winding down with television, downloading sitcoms and anime episodes in advance allowed Hadden to maintain a familiar nighttime routine.

Staying Active and Social

During the longer train stops (10 minutes or more), passengers are permitted to disembark. Hadden used these opportunities to get fresh air and engage in light cardio, such as jumping jacks and even imaginary hopscotch. While perhaps an unusual sight for fellow travelers, this brief burst of activity helped release pent-up energy and contribute to better sleep.

Finally, embracing the social aspect of long-distance train travel was a significant factor in making the trip more enjoyable. Amtrak’s dining car seating arrangements, which often pair different parties together, facilitate conversation. Hadden took advantage of this, learning about fellow passengers’ travel plans and continuing these conversations on the platform during stops.

Upon disembarking in Emeryville, California, after 53 hours, the traveler felt a sense of accomplishment. The journey on the California Zephyr wasn’t just endured; it was a testament to thoughtful planning and an open mind, proving that even the longest train ride in the US can be a comfortable, rested, and fulfilling experience.
