MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — It was a hot day for a hot competition in Downtown Mobile on Saturday, where the American Cancer Society Chili Cookoff brought dozens of competitors and thousands of chili-lovers together.More than 70 types of piping hot chili were served up on Canal Street Saturday afternoon.
“It’s got to have the right amount of spice for me,” one attendee said.“Their chili was dynamite!” another attendee said.
Pots filled with all kinds of chili were available, from classics with hearty beans and ground beef to creamy white bean chilis with chicken and avocado.“I’ve learned that I love beans in my chili,” a participant said.Those competing in the cookoff brought their A-game, with rookie entries and previous champs all competing for the top prize.
“We’ve been doing this 16 years to perfect our recipe,” one competitor said. “We cook with love and friendship and you can really taste it in the chili I think,” their teammate continued.News 5 brought a little flavor to the mainstage while emceeing the competition, with a classic Texas chili with just the perfect amount of spice.
